Tiki the sea turtle

This is the first game I have ever created in Unity. Tiki the Sea Turtle was created in December 2019 before being published in March 2020. The artwork was hand-drawn by Hope L. and edited/colored by me.

This game was designed to teach kids about the struggles of being a hungry sea turtle. Trash pollutes the oceans and plastic bags can be confused with jellyfish. Complete with friends to see if you can get the highest score before getting too much trash.

Behind the Scene

This project was my first official introduction to using Unity. I followed a mix of tutorials on YouTube and gained the most inspiration from the YouTuber, Blackthornprod. He has created several indie games in his time and makes excellent tutorials. Originally this game was going to be a Platform Game where the main character was a starfish named Kai. The story of the game was that the starfish would go around collecting the lost mermaids’ fortune and bring it back to save the day! And even though this cute concept didn’t make it to the finished product I do hope to someday revisit the idea.

At the time of creating the game, I had told myself to start small at first. I changed the idea to match an arcade game I played a lot as a kid, and the idea exploded from there. I have always loved marine life animals and I felt that with it being a kid’s game some educational value should be brought to the game as well. This is where the enemy or “danger” is presented in the game. The goal is to collect as many jellyfish as possible before accidentally eating too many plastic items.

Since the game’s release, it has obtained mentions on Social Media from the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park and online influencer, Dr. Wildlife.
